SUMMARY:MBSR Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program 8 Weeks
DESCRIPTION:The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program (MBSR) was pioneered by Jon Kabat Zinn\, PhD at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center’s Center for Mindfulness over 40 years ago. Since then over 6000 studies have been published worldwide attesting to the effectiveness of the program. The effects of stress can be felt physically\, mentally and emotionally and the studies delve into all of these categories and more. We define mindfulness as paying attention moment by moment on purpose and without judgement. \nThe practice of mindfulness has been around for thousands of years and the far reaching benefits have been attested to by practitioners over the centuries. Mindfulness can now be found in practically every segment of our lives including\, but not limited to\, healthcare\, academics\, the arts\, sports\, business and peak performance. It has spawned other related programs such as Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy(MBCT)\, Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention Program for Depression\, Mindful Eating Programs and Mindfulness in the Schools just to name a few. \nAlong with all the other benefits\, as the practice of mindfulness unfolds in your life it can be recognized by a sense of experiencing life more fully along with a deeper sense of peace\, compassion and feeling of wellbeing. There is a renewed sense of being connected to yourself and the world around you….a renewed sense of curiosity\, resilience and the adventure of life. So become a Phoenix mindfulness enthusiast\, begin the adventure now!

SUMMARY:Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy for Depression (MBCT)
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an 8-week group course recommended in national health guidelines for people who suffer from or have suffered from depression in the past. \nWeekly sessions are 2 hours and delivered online. They involve mindfulness meditation with cognitive therapy exercises to support you to become more aware of your mind and body and begin to dissolve some less helpful habits of thinking\, such as rumination\, worry and self-criticism. \nOver the past 15 years MBCT has become increasingly available within health services as the advantages of using this approach have become more established. \nIts popularity has increased as people are drawn to the central message of MBCT; that our lives are immeasurably impoverished by our habitual tendency to be on ‘automatic pilot’\, during which the richness of momentary experience passes unnoticed. MBCT helps us develop an alternative way of being with experience as we learn skills to more fully engage with our present experience\, to be ‘in the moment’. \nMBCT courses are delivered online in collaboration with the Nottingham Centre for Mindfulness\, located within the UK’s National Health Service (NHS)\, who have been providing MBCT to people accessing their clinical services since 2007. Their mindfulness teachers offer this intervention in a wide range of clinical settings.

SUMMARY:Day of Practice for Trained Teachers – Theme: Hope
DESCRIPTION:Together\, we’ll explore how wisely facing difficulties and challenges can support us to meet uncertainty with hope and\, how a wise sense of hope can inform our teaching and nourish our own practice. By letting go of habitual tendencies to fixate on particular outcomes\, we can find an open-hearted quality that enables us to respond\, rather than react\, to life’s ups and downs. \nDesigned specifically for fully-trained mindfulness teachers\, this session supports continued professional development and meets the British Association of Mindfulness-Based Approaches (BAMBA)’s Good Practice Guidelines by contributing toward annual retreat requirements. \nIf you’re a fully trained mindfulness teacher seeking to deepen your practice and meet your annual retreat requirements\, we warmly invite you to join us for this Day of Practice. \nPlease note: This event is included\, at no extra cost\, as part of the Oxford Mindfulness Members’ Programme benefits for trained teachers. \nIf you’re a trained teacher\, but aren’t currently a member\, you’re still welcome to join by selecting the appropriate fee option at registration.

SUMMARY:Retreat: Deepening and Extending the Foundations of Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:This online retreat provides a wonderful opportunity to practice in a supported and sustained way within community whilst taking practice into the heart of one’s home environment. The retreat structure\, teaching process and learning community of fellow participants and teachers provide a scaffold to engage in an individual and collective exploration of human experience\, supportive of a deepening understanding of mindfulness as a way of being in the world. \nThe retreat will be structured around perspectives on the four ways of establishing mindfulness from classical Buddhist teachings\, and an exploration of four heart qualities (friendliness\, compassion\, appreciative joy\, equanimity) known as the Brahmaviharas in early Buddhist tradition and as the Four Friends for Life in mainstream mindfulness approaches. Together\, these frameworks offer a powerful foundation for cultivating inner stability\, emotional resilience\, and compassionate presence in everyday life. \nThese teachings will be offered as a framework to support first-person exploration of experience in formal and informal mindfulness practice – the core curriculum will be the immediacy of personal experience. Whilst having their roots in Buddhist psychology\, the themes\, teaching\, practice guidance and explorations will be presented in terms of their application to mainstream mindfulness programmes such as MBSR and MBCT. \nThe retreat will include: \nperiods of both guided and self-directed practice\, including periods of mindful movement\nshort talks\nsustained periods of silence to enable participants to connect more fully with their inner experience\ntime to practice mindfulness informally between the scheduled sessions\nopportunities for group inquiries with the teachers.\nThe teachers will also be available to talk to people individually as needed.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for cancer: Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:This one-day masterclass will offer an opportunity to learn about the underpinnings of the eight-week mindfulness course\, MBCT for Cancer. \nWhat is covered?\nThe masterclass will involve exploring the main themes of the MBCT for Cancer (MBCT-Ca) course. This includes exploring and explaining: \nThe Four Movements of Intention\, Coming Back\, Turning Towards\, and Kindness. MBCT-Ca turns towards sensations in the body\, which some might find surprising as it is the body that has let people with cancer down. So the body is a focus in the programme; arguably more than other MBCT curricula. The group process and the experience of being in the group is another important feature of MBCT for Cancer. This is partly because there is a strong bond within people who have experienced diagnosis and treatment for cancer. So the group is very much part of how we teach this programme.\nThe particular emphases of MBCT-Ca includes brief practices\, the body\, group work and special processes. These are exercises that have been developed within the programme. They offer ways of working around understanding reactivity and using a circle chart\, rather than a list for pleasant and unpleasant experience.\nThe day will offer the opportunity to experience some of the practices and ways of working\, as well as hearing about the rewards and challenges of working with people with cancer. \nWho is this for?\nThis workshop is for mindfulness teachers and teacher trainees who might be interested in running the eight-week\, Mindfulness for Cancer course. Though it should be noted this masterclass alone will not equip you to run the eight-week course. Further training would be required for that. \nThe facilitator\nTrish Bartley \nCost: See tiered pricing on the webpage (15£-99£) \nMindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for cancer: Masterclass

SUMMARY:Mindfulness for living with cancer: Eight-week course – Thursday evenings
DESCRIPTION:This eight-week course uses mindfulness as a tool for self-care to support those living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis. It is designed to help improve wellbeing and give you tools to respond to the stresses and strains of everyday life. It is based on the original ground-breaking Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy course. \nReceiving a cancer diagnosis\, undergoing treatments and living with the ongoing possibility of a recurrence\, however great or small\, is a life-changing experience – things will never be ‘the same as they were before’. However\, this is the hope and expectation of those around us\, particularly once active treatment has come to an end. This can leave us feeling isolated\, unheard and plagued by thoughts of ‘what if’. \nIn this eight-week mindfulness course\, written specifically for those living with a cancer diagnosis by leading practitioner in the field\, Trish Bartley\, we explore our daily experiences. This is not counselling\, but is skills-based learning that offers tools to help you work in a more skilful and compassionate way with the day-to-day challenges we face. \nParticipants welcome talking about the impact of cancer on their daily life with others ‘who get it’ as opposed to friends and family. They are engaged by learning what this thing called ‘mindfulness’ is and how each of us can apply it in our daily lives\, as a form of self-care. \nAttendance at all eight sessions of the course is crucial\, as is the commitment to 30 minutes of daily home practice. Many of us will need to carve out this time from the busyness of our daily routines\, the various roles we play\, as well as our habitual tendencies. There maybe 101 reasons why we may not be able to commit to this. But then we may also ask\, ‘if not now\, when?’ Maybe this is the time to prioritise our own self-care. \nWho is it for?\nThis eight-week course is designed for both those living with and beyond the cancer diagnosis\, be it a recent diagnosis or many years ago\, as well as others also affected. This includes partners\, family members\, carers and friends. \nAll active\, hospital-based treatment needs to have been completed\, and participants will need the physical and mental presence to gain the best from the course. Each applicant will have 45-minute one-to-one meeting with the course tutor\, Chris Barker\, to discuss their unique situation and hopes for the course. This helps ensure that this is the ‘right time’ for such a significant undertaking\, and to ensure the hopes / expectations are in line with what this course typically offers. No charge will be made for those who do not progress with the course following this meeting. \nWhen?\nEvery Thursday evening from 6.30-9pm\, starting on 16 April 2026 and concluding on 4 June 2026. An optional half-day retreat will take place from 10am to 2.30pm on Sunday 24 May 2026. \nWhere?\nThe course and retreat are both online. \nYou will get Zoom log-in details when your place is confirmed. \nThe format of the course?\nThe course involves: \nOne-to-one pre-course meeting lasting 45-minutes with the course tutor Chris Barker.\nEight weekly two and a half hour classes including mindfulness practices\, discussion and exercises.\nOptional half-day retreat\, lasting four and a half hours.\nDaily meditation home practice of 30 minutes. \nFacilitator\nChris Barker

SUMMARY:Deeper Mindfulness: Exploring feeling tone frame by frame (8-week course)
DESCRIPTION:Deeper Mindfulness: Exploring Feeling Tone Frame-by-Frame is an 8-week course developed by Professor Mark Williams and colleagues\, designed for you if you’ve already completed a mindfulness-based programme and you’d like to explore mindfulness more deeply.\nIt’s informed by recent psychological findings that reveal that every waking moment\, our understanding of the world is dominated by imagining how we can take action within it\, coloured by what is called ‘feeling tone’ – the moment-by-moment ‘read-out’ of whether a sensation\, thought or emotion feels pleasant\, unpleasant\, or neither. Based on this moment-by-moment ‘read out’\, the body allocates its resources as it gears up for real or imagined action. This can prepare us well for action\, but it can also put us at risk of becoming exhausted without our realising it.\nAncient traditions saw feeling tone (vedana) as a fundamental element of every moment of experience and a central aspect of mindfulness practice. Learning specific practices to help us become aware of feeling tone allows us to see clearly the very instant where we become caught up in pursuing or rejecting something and become entangled in a web of emotional distress. Meditation teacher Joseph Goldstein has said that mindfulness of feeling tone is one of the master keys that both reveals and unlocks the deepest patterns of our conditioning.\nDuring the 8 weekly sessions\, you’ll learn meditations that prepare you for\, then help you tune into\, feeling tone – frame-by-frame. This provides you with an opportunity to see more clearly both the tipping points for distress and exhaustion\, and also how to flourish by freeing yourself to appreciate life again\, even in the midst of difficulty.

SUMMARY:Half Day of Practice - Theme: Patience
DESCRIPTION:The session is 3 hours and includes guided sitting\, standing and movement practices of up to 30 minutes in length\, and some extended periods of silence. \nTypically\, each Day of Practice has a theme based on one of the attitudes we explore as part of both mindfulness practice and everyday experience. For example\, non-judging’\, ‘patience’\, ‘letting go’ etc. \nThe theme for this Day of Practice is ‘Patience’. \nThe practices won’t be exclusively about that attitude\, but may be explored with have a ‘flavour’ of the theme for that day. This might mean exploring ‘non-striving’ as part of the body scan or ‘allowing’ in a movement practice. \nThe Day of Practice is designed for those with an existing mindfulness practice\, as well as teachers (or trainee teachers) of mindfulness-based programmes. It meets the British Association of Mindfulness-Based Approaches (BAMBA) Good Practice Guidelines by contributing towards annual retreat requirements.

SUMMARY:Same (but different): Neurodiversity-friendly mindfulness practice
DESCRIPTION:It has become increasingly obvious that there are many people who might benefit from mindfulness-based interventions who struggle to access what is currently available in the UK. \nThis workshop will cover ways of making mindfulness more inclusive and accessible for adults who identify as neurodivergent. \nWhat is covered?\nA stimulating morning/afternoon where we will be looking at what’s working well and what’s not working so well in four areas \nThe experience of mindfulness and mindful self-compassion training from a participant perspective (Hannah)\nThe experience of mindfulness teaching training (from a trainee perspective) (Libby)\nThe experience of increasing inclusion working in talking therapies in the NHS setting (Julie)\nA “blue skies” approach looking from a systems level perspective on the landscape of mindfulness research and clinical practice with some case studies of really “doing mindfulness differently” (Tamara) \nThe format\nEach facilitator will share a 30-minute talk followed by a 10-minute mindfulness practice. And for those attending the live event\, there will also be 10-minutes of Q&A with each facilitator\, a breakout group to explore “what stops innovation in mindfulness in the UK” and a panel discussion. There will be plenty of short breaks throughout the day as well as a lunch break. You can see the detailed timetable here \nWho is this for?\nThis event is for anyone who is a mindfulness/mindful self-compassion teacher or working with mindfulness in adult populations in a professional capacity who wishes to know more about how to make mindfulness more inclusive. \nWhere? SUMMARY:Taking it Further (12-week course)
DESCRIPTION:People often ask: “What happens next?” or “How can I keep up my practice?” Many people graduating an 8-week programme would like to continue the learning they have started and would welcome some guidance and support in this journey. \nThe Taking it Further course was developed to meet this need. It starts from the premise that all the themes within mindfulness-based courses can be explored for a lifetime\, conveying new insights that can be applied throughout people’s lives. The first major randomised controlled trial has demonstrated the effectiveness of the Taking it Further course: the skills learned have the potential to support increased wellbeing and flourishing. \nEspecially created for those who have completed an 8-week Mindfulness for Life or MBCT course\, this 12-theme course is structured to support a lifelong learning journey. Participants begin by reviewing what it means to wake up\, and to intentionally give attention\, energy and time to what brings them joy\, meaning and purpose. Over time\, they develop confidence to meet difficulty with kindness\, savour joy with appreciation\, align their choices with their deepest values\, and act with courage and authenticity. These three keys of mindfulness (awareness\, befriending and intention) extend to include a fourth – action. Together they are ways of being that can support people to live the life they aspire to.

SUMMARY:Introducing Mindfulness (3-week course)
DESCRIPTION:If you’re new to mindfulness\, or you’d like to come back to it after some time out\, our 3-week Introducing Mindfulness course gives you a brief taste of mindfulness practice and theory. \nDelivered weekly\, in this course you’ll explore three core mindfulness themes\, each designed to support you in your daily life: How to train your attention and how this can fundamentally shape your experiences\, learning new ways of being and how this can help support you in any moment\, recognising the difference between responding and reacting and exploring how this understanding can shape the quality of your life. \nThe group sessions are led by an experienced Oxford Mindfulness teacher and combine learning\, experiential mindfulness practices\, trying out what’s learned in your daily life\, and group discussions. \nThis is a structured course\, with the theme of each session building on the learning and experience from the previous week. You’ll also be invited to continue to practise the sessions’ themes through some ‘home practice’.
