SUMMARY:MBSR Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program 8 Weeks
DESCRIPTION:The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program (MBSR) was pioneered by Jon Kabat Zinn\, PhD at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center’s Center for Mindfulness over 40 years ago. Since then over 6000 studies have been published worldwide attesting to the effectiveness of the program. The effects of stress can be felt physically\, mentally and emotionally and the studies delve into all of these categories and more. We define mindfulness as paying attention moment by moment on purpose and without judgement. \nThe practice of mindfulness has been around for thousands of years and the far reaching benefits have been attested to by practitioners over the centuries. Mindfulness can now be found in practically every segment of our lives including\, but not limited to\, healthcare\, academics\, the arts\, sports\, business and peak performance. It has spawned other related programs such as Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy(MBCT)\, Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention Program for Depression\, Mindful Eating Programs and Mindfulness in the Schools just to name a few. \nAlong with all the other benefits\, as the practice of mindfulness unfolds in your life it can be recognized by a sense of experiencing life more fully along with a deeper sense of peace\, compassion and feeling of wellbeing. There is a renewed sense of being connected to yourself and the world around you….a renewed sense of curiosity\, resilience and the adventure of life. So become a Phoenix mindfulness enthusiast\, begin the adventure now!

SUMMARY:Foundations of mindfulness: Five-day retreat
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on Buddhist conceptualisations of the nature of experience\, suffering and the self\, the retreat will offer a bridge into contemporary secular mindfulness practice\, teaching and life. The five-day retreat takes place Ammerdown Retreat Centre\, near Bath. It is led by Ruth Sequeira\, Chris Barker\, Jo Cromarty and Robert Marx. \nThe retreat \nThis retreat will support a deepening of participants’ mindfulness practice using the framework of the four Foundations of Mindfulness (satipatthana) and the Four Divine Abidings (brahma vihara). Drawing on Buddhist conceptualisations of the nature of experience\, suffering and the self\, the retreat will offer a bridge into contemporary secular mindfulness practice\, teaching and life. The retreat will use a traditional retreat structure which allows us to simplify our life in order to see more clearly how we relate to ourselves and the world\, and to respond with kindness and compassion. There will be periods of teaching\, guided and unguided practice\, dialogue and unstructured time. Most of the week will be held in silence with opportunities to for a one-to-one meeting with a retreat leader and for optional peer sharing groups. \nWhere and when is it?\nThe retreat is at the beautiful Ammerdown Retreat Centre\, near Bath. The retreat starts on Sunday\, 20 September and finishes at 2pm on Friday\, 25 September 2026. You can arrive between 5pm and 6pm on the Sunday. \nWho is the retreat for? \nThe retreat is suitable for mindfulness teachers in training\, qualified mindfulness teachers and those simply wanting to deepen their practice and bridge contemplative wisdom traditions and secular practice and teaching. The retreat will count as their retreat for those training in mindfulness-based approaches with the Sussex Mindfulness Centre MC or NHS Talking Therapies; and for those applying to\, or renewing their membership on the BAMBA Register\, this retreat meets the requirement for mindfulness teachers to do an annual\, mostly silent retreat. \nWhat requirements are there to attend? \nCompletion of an eight-week mindfulness course (MBCT/MBSR)\, or similar eight-week programme\, and participation in at least a day of guided silent mindfulness practice. Please ensure you are able to attend the entire event. If this is not possible\, please contact us at spft.smc@nhs.net to discuss before submitting an application. \nWe will offer a short online orientation meeting a few weeks before the retreat to help you think about the optimal conditions to support you in the retreat. A zoom link will be sent nearer to the start date for this.

SUMMARY:Mindful Self-Compassion course: eight weeks – Monday evenings
DESCRIPTION:Our eight-week Mindful Self-Compassion course teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to challenges and difficult emotions with care and understanding. \nMonday evenings\, from 5 to 7.30pm. The orientation is on 21 September followed by the eight-week course from 28 September to 16 November. \nOverview\nHow we respond to those around us is fundamental to a happy life. We are often encouraged to be kind to people. But in trying to show compassion towards others\, we may forget to look after ourselves. Can we truly be kind to anyone else if we cannot be kind to ourselves? \nIn the Mindful Self-Compassion course we offer ways to meet our own challenges with greater care. Through the course we will learn how to be more mindful of our own feelings in response to others. And we learn how this can help us to be more resilient in difficult situations. We also learn to be less judgemental and more caring. We will learn how this can reduce anxiety\, leaving us more open to making helpful changes in our lives. \nThe course creates a safe\, supportive environment. There are three core components: \nmindfulness (being present with whatever is happening)\nself-kindness (treating ourselves with care\, rather than criticism)\ncommon humanity (recognising our suffering as part of the shared human experience) \nThe weekly sessions include: \n– meditations\n– short talks\n– discussion\, including in small groups\n– experiential exercises\n– resources to support home practice \nThe course creators are Kristin Neff\, researcher in the field of self-compassion. And Christopher Germer\, leader in the integration of mindfulness and psychotherapy. They have each published books on the subject. You can find out more about our Mindful Self-Compassion course here. \nWho is this course for?\nThis course is designed for the general public\, so you do not need to have attended a mindfulness course before. Please note\, this courses may not be suitable for everyone. If you are experiencing mental health issues\, you should talk to your GP about being referred to the appropriate clinical service.

SUMMARY:Mindful creative all-day retreat
DESCRIPTION:A one-day mindfulness retreat\, including meditation practices\, creative expression and journaling\, that will be held mostly in silence. Experience of creative expression is not necessary. \nBackground to the day \nThis day builds on the positive responses from offering a similar event last year. We realised from last year’s experience that there was a real hunger\, both for connecting with our creativity and also for engaging with mindfulness and compassion practices in ways that keep us freshly discovering ourselves. We found last time that for some people\, creative practices really deepened places inside that they could access in a way that was both different from\, and also complementary to\, the mindfulness practice. \nChögyam Trungpa Rinpoche\, the great Tibetan meditation teacher\, saw art as a direct extension of meditation practice. He believed that art naturally arises from the clarity of the settled mind. Trungpa emphasized a “Dharma art” that was simple\, immediate and unembellished\, not an ego-based\, “self-expression”: “Dharma art is simply the activity of nonaggression. It is the expression of basic sanity. When you are free from aggression\, your perception becomes clear and precise. Then whatever you do – whether arranging flowers\, painting\, writing poetry\, or making a cup of tea – can become an expression of that sanity.” \nContent of the day \nThis day will be held as a mostly silent retreat day with mindfulness practices interspersed with creativity\, using clay\, drawing/painting and journaling. Some meditation experience (such as having done an 8 week course) is required but no experience of artistic work is needed. Materials will be supplied. The day will be held at the Sussex Education Centre on the Millview hospital site. \nWhy a one-day retreat? \nA one-day mindfulness retreat is an important part of the eight-week mindfulness course. It also offers an opportunity to extend your practice within a supportive environment. For people who meditate regularly the retreat offers a great way to deepen and refresh your practice. Read more about the benefits of a day long retreat. \nThis day retreat counts towards the requirement to attend silent retreats as part your BAMBA registration as a mindfulness teacher. \nWho is it for?\nThis day is right for you if you have attended an eight-week Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy\, Mindfulness for Life or Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course\, or have an established mindfulness practice. No artistic experience is required. Please note\, this is not a clinical intervention and it is not advisable to do this day in the heat of a crisis\, when it would be important to access your GP or your designated mental health clinician. \nRetreat leaders: Robert Marx\, Sarah Marx

SUMMARY:Resourcing ourselves in uncertain times: Online weekend retreat
DESCRIPTION:A weekend retreat from your own home. Within the current uncertainty and challenges in our world\, this retreat will explore how our mindfulness practice can resource us\, supporting steadiness\, openness\, joy\, compassion and nourishment. \nBrief overview\nThe retreat will offer mindfulness and compassion practices designed to deepen self-care and our capacities to be open and available to others in these uncertain times. With the scaffolding of the four foundations of mindfulness\, we will explore together how we can resource ourselves in our practice\, building stability and fostering qualities of the heart\, such as tenderness\, courage\, kindness and joy. \nWe will offer a mix of guided and unguided practices including periods of stillness\, movement\, rest and unstructured silent time. \nWe are committed to ensuring that our retreats are accessible and inclusive to diverse communities and are keen to support participants who may have specific needs related to disability\, health or other conditions. Please feel welcome to contact us if it would be helpful to discuss any support needs prior to the retreat. \nMost of the retreat will be held in silence\, though there is the possibility to talk to either of the teachers individually if needed. \nStructured sessions\nThe programme will run from Friday evening until Sunday morning with the following timings for structured sessions: \nFriday 6 November: 6.30 – 8.30pm\nSaturday 7 November: 7.15 – 8am; 9.30am – 12.30pm; 2.30pm – 5.30pm; 7.30 – 8.30pm\nSunday 8 November: 7.15 – 8am; 9.30 – 1pm\nWe encourage participants to consider the whole weekend as an opportunity for an extended period of practice\, rest and silence\, as far as this is possible and compassionate given your life situation. \nWhere is it?\nOnline. You can attend from your own home whether or not you live with others. You will be given guidance on how to prepare for the retreat. \nWho is the retreat for?\nThe retreat is designed for people with some experience of mindfulness and/or compassion practice who want to deepen their practice in a supportive\, safe environment. As a minimum\, participants should have a regular practice of their own and should have done an eight-week mindfulness-based or compassion-based course. And it is helpful to have attended at least a one-day\, silent retreat. \nThe retreat is a valuable opportunity for mindfulness and compassion-based teachers to further deepen their practice in community with others. SUMMARY:Fierce Self-Compassion teacher training practicum
DESCRIPTION:This teacher training practicum is for Mindful Self-Compassion teachers who want to develop the skills to teach the Fierce Self-Compassion course. \nOVERVIEW\nThis six-week online training will deepen your understanding\, familiarity and confidence with the content\, structure\, tone\, and pacing of the Fierce Self-Compassion course. After the successful completion of this training you can teach the Fierce Self-Compassion course to the general public. \nTraining to teach Fierce Self-Compassion means you can empower others toward taking protective\, action-oriented steps to change harmful situations\, both for themselves and others. You may be a Mindful Self-Compassion teacher who wants to expand your portfolio of courses to deliver\, or you may simply want to deepen your own capacity for the “mother bear” or yang energy that’s needed as part of working with groups or one to one. \nWHO IS THIS PRACTICUM FOR?\nThe course is for Mindful Self-Compassion teachers with either trained teacher or certified teacher status. \nWHEN?\nThursday afternoons from 4pm to 7pm. This six-week course starts on Thursday 28 January and runs until 4 March 2027\, without a break. \nWHERE?\nOnline. Once your place is confirmed\, you will get Zoom log-in details\, usually two weeks before the course starts. \nTHE FORMAT?\nThis is where theory becomes practice. The Fierce Self-Compassion Practicum has been developed and designed by a group of senior Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) teachers with the specific intention of providing opportunities to begin to practice the teaching skills required with each other in a safe\, structured environment. Each session will offer opportunities to practice teaching core components of the Fierce Self-Compassion course and to receive feedback from the trainers. \nEach three-hour session will include a fifteen minute break. Between sessions\, you will be expected to prepare\, through meditation and reading\, to teach an allocated part of the curriculum. Additional resources and tips will be sent by email after each class. \nFACILITATORS\nAli Lambie\nZoe Shobbrook-Fisher \nA few early birds tickets still available \nFind more details about the practicum\, facilitators and fees here:https://sussexmindfulnesscentre.nhs.uk/event/fierce-self-compassion-teacher-training-practicum/
