SUMMARY:Mindfulness eight-week course: Wednesday afternoons
DESCRIPTION:This course will help improve wellbeing and give you tools to respond to the stresses and strains of everyday life. It has been developed for the general population\, and is based on the original Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy course. \nOverview\nThis course helps participants develop greater awareness of their thoughts\, emotions\, and experiences which in turn helps cultivate resilience and reduce low-mood and anxiety. It combines mindfulness practices and cognitive-behavioural techniques. There is increasing evidence that shows mindfulness is effective for reducing low-mood\, and helping to improve wellbeing and resilience. \nWho is it for?\nThis course has been adapted for members of the general public who are looking to improve their wellbeing and discover tools to help with the general stresses and strains of everyday life. Taking this course also counts as one of the requirements for joining our mindfulness teacher training\, if this is something you may be interested in. \nPlease note\, this course may not be suitable for everyone. If you are experiencing mental health issues\, you should talk to your GP about being referred to the appropriate clinical service. Many NHS services now provide MBCT free of charge for people with mental health difficulties. You can find details on referrals and self-referral here. \nWhen?\nWednesday afternoons from 3 to 5pm. The orientation session is on Wednesday 7 October and the eight-week course runs from 14 October to 9 December 2026. (No session 28 October.) \nTo get the benefits of this course it is helpful if you can attend all the sessions. If you cannot attend all the sessions (see above dates) then it may be better for you to wait for another course when you can. \nWhere?\nOnline. You will get Zoom log-in details approximately one week before the start date. \nThe format of the course?\nThe course will involve: \nTwo-hour orientation session at the start to find out what to expect during the course and ask any questions you may have\nDaily meditation home practice of between 20 to 40 minutes\nEight weekly two-hour classes including mindfulness practices\, discussion and exercises\nAn optional one-day online retreat\nThe course involves mindfulness meditation practices of up to 30 minutes in each group session\, and recommended daily home practice of between 20-40 minutes. These will be guided by the mindfulness teacher in each session\, and via audio recordings for the home practice. Everything is optional\, and you are encouraged only to do what feels safe and comfortable for you. The practices may involve lying down\, sitting\, walking and other forms of movement. \nIn the sessions\, the mindfulness teacher will invite group members to share their experiences of practice. Again this is completely optional\, and you are encouraged to share only what you are comfortable with. The sessions will include smaller-group discussions\, typically with two to four people. If the class is online these discussions will be via break out rooms. \nFacilitators\nClara Strauss with trainee Charlotte Townsend.

SUMMARY:Mindful Movement Teacher Training
DESCRIPTION:Train to teach movement practices that unlock mindfulness – so your students can go deeper\, meditate with ease\, and discover embodied presence. \n– Are you a meditation teacher seeking skills to lead movement practices with confidence?\n– Or\, maybe you’re a yoga teacher looking to offer a more contemplative\, mindfulness-based\, and accessible practice?\n– Perhaps you’re a therapist\, health professional\, or educator\, and you have a hunch that simple mindful movement practices could really benefit the people you work with? \nThis training was created with your needs and goals in mind! \nConscious movement can be an effective way to learn mindfulness skills\, like concentration\, balanced effort\, working with sensations\, and observing thoughts and emotions. For many people\, it’s easier to build these “mindfulness muscles” first through movement\, so that they can then be applied in the stillness of meditation (and in daily life\, where the rubber meets the road!). This unique online training is designed to develop your skills in leading movement practices that center mindfulness\, so that your students can learn to be more present for what matters to them. \nWe will take an inter-disciplinary approach\, studying mindfulness teachings from the Buddhist tradition\, as well as movement practices from Yoga\, Somatics\, and Qigong. Each of these modalities offers something unique and valuable to the cultivation of embodied awareness. \nThis 60-hour online training will unfold over six months\, so that you have time to really integrate the teachings and develop your skills. The first live session is October 10\, 2026! Please see the website for further details: https://www.movedtomeditate.yoga/mmtt

SUMMARY:Mindful creative all-day retreat
DESCRIPTION:A one-day mindfulness retreat\, including meditation practices\, creative expression and journaling\, that will be held mostly in silence. Experience of creative expression is not necessary. \nBackground to the day \nThis day builds on the positive responses from offering a similar event last year. We realised from last year’s experience that there was a real hunger\, both for connecting with our creativity and also for engaging with mindfulness and compassion practices in ways that keep us freshly discovering ourselves. We found last time that for some people\, creative practices really deepened places inside that they could access in a way that was both different from\, and also complementary to\, the mindfulness practice. \nChögyam Trungpa Rinpoche\, the great Tibetan meditation teacher\, saw art as a direct extension of meditation practice. He believed that art naturally arises from the clarity of the settled mind. Trungpa emphasized a “Dharma art” that was simple\, immediate and unembellished\, not an ego-based\, “self-expression”: “Dharma art is simply the activity of nonaggression. It is the expression of basic sanity. When you are free from aggression\, your perception becomes clear and precise. Then whatever you do – whether arranging flowers\, painting\, writing poetry\, or making a cup of tea – can become an expression of that sanity.” \nContent of the day \nThis day will be held as a mostly silent retreat day with mindfulness practices interspersed with creativity\, using clay\, drawing/painting and journaling. Some meditation experience (such as having done an 8 week course) is required but no experience of artistic work is needed. Materials will be supplied. The day will be held at the Sussex Education Centre on the Millview hospital site. \nWhy a one-day retreat? \nA one-day mindfulness retreat is an important part of the eight-week mindfulness course. It also offers an opportunity to extend your practice within a supportive environment. For people who meditate regularly the retreat offers a great way to deepen and refresh your practice. Read more about the benefits of a day long retreat. \nThis day retreat counts towards the requirement to attend silent retreats as part your BAMBA registration as a mindfulness teacher. \nWho is it for?\nThis day is right for you if you have attended an eight-week Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy\, Mindfulness for Life or Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course\, or have an established mindfulness practice. No artistic experience is required. Please note\, this is not a clinical intervention and it is not advisable to do this day in the heat of a crisis\, when it would be important to access your GP or your designated mental health clinician. \nRetreat leaders: Robert Marx\, Sarah Marx

SUMMARY:Deeper Mindfulness: Exploring feeling tone frame by frame (8-week course)
DESCRIPTION:Deeper Mindfulness: Exploring Feeling Tone Frame-by-Frame is an 8-week course developed by Professor Mark Williams and colleagues\, designed for you if you’ve already completed a mindfulness-based programme and you’d like to explore mindfulness more deeply. \nIt’s informed by recent psychological findings that reveal that every waking moment\, our understanding of the world is dominated by imagining how we can take action within it\, coloured by what is called ‘feeling tone’ – the moment-by-moment ‘read-out’ of whether a sensation\, thought or emotion feels pleasant\, unpleasant\, or neither. Based on this moment-by-moment ‘read out’\, the body allocates its resources as it gears up for real or imagined action. This can prepare us well for action\, but it can also put us at risk of becoming exhausted without our realising it. \nAncient traditions saw feeling tone (vedana) as a fundamental element of every moment of experience and a central aspect of mindfulness practice. Learning specific practices to help us become aware of feeling tone allows us to see clearly the very instant where we become caught up in pursuing or rejecting something and become entangled in a web of emotional distress. Meditation teacher Joseph Goldstein has said that mindfulness of feeling tone is one of the master keys that both reveals and unlocks the deepest patterns of our conditioning. \nDuring the 8 weekly sessions\, you’ll learn meditations that prepare you for\, then help you tune into\, feeling tone – frame-by-frame. This provides you with an opportunity to see more clearly both the tipping points for distress and exhaustion\, and also how to flourish by freeing yourself to appreciate life again\, even in the midst of difficulty.

SUMMARY:Half-Day of Practice – Theme: Trust
DESCRIPTION:The session is 3 hours and includes guided sitting\, standing and movement practices of up to 30 minutes in length\, and some extended periods of silence. \nTypically\, each Day of Practice has a theme based on one of the attitudes we explore as part of both mindfulness practice and everyday experience. For example\, non-judging’\, ‘patience’\, ‘letting go’ etc. \nThe theme for this Day of Practice is ‘Trust’. \nThe practices won’t be exclusively about that attitude\, but may be explored with have a ‘flavour’ of the theme for that day. This might mean exploring ‘non-striving’ as part of the body scan or ‘allowing’ in a movement practice. \nThe Day of Practice is designed for those with an existing mindfulness practice\, as well as teachers (or trainee teachers) of mindfulness-based programmes.

With the scaffolding of the four foundations of mindfulness\, we will explore together how we can resource ourselves in our practice\, building stability and fostering qualities of the heart\, such as tenderness\, courage\, kindness and joy. \nWe will offer a mix of guided and unguided practices including periods of stillness\, movement\, rest and unstructured silent time. \nWe are committed to ensuring that our retreats are accessible and inclusive to diverse communities and are keen to support participants who may have specific needs related to disability\, health or other conditions. Please feel welcome to contact us if it would be helpful to discuss any support needs prior to the retreat. \nMost of the retreat will be held in silence\, though there is the possibility to talk to either of the teachers individually if needed. \nStructured sessions\nThe programme will run from Friday evening until Sunday morning with the following timings for structured sessions: \nFriday 6 November: 6.30 – 8.30pm\nSaturday 7 November: 7.15 – 8am; 9.30am – 12.30pm; 2.30pm – 5.30pm; 7.30 – 8.30pm\nSunday 8 November: 7.15 – 8am; 9.30 – 1pm\nWe encourage participants to consider the whole weekend as an opportunity for an extended period of practice\, rest and silence\, as far as this is possible and compassionate given your life situation. \nWhere is it?\nOnline. You can attend from your own home whether or not you live with others. You will be given guidance on how to prepare for the retreat. \nWho is the retreat for?\nThe retreat is designed for people with some experience of mindfulness and/or compassion practice who want to deepen their practice in a supportive\, safe environment. As a minimum\, participants should have a regular practice of their own and should have done an eight-week mindfulness-based or compassion-based course. And it is helpful to have attended at least a one-day\, silent retreat. \nThe retreat is a valuable opportunity for mindfulness and compassion-based teachers to further deepen their practice in community with others. The retreat will count towards the annual retreat requirement for teachers and supervisors on the BAMBA Register. \nRetreat leaders\nBridgette O’Neill – Ruth Sequeira \nHow much does it cost?\nThe cost of this retreat is £200. (We also offer a choice of two other options:250 and 150). \nFind more information here: https://sussexmindfulnesscentre.nhs.uk/event/resourcing-ourselves-in-uncertain-times-retreat/

SUMMARY:Taking it Further (12-week course)
DESCRIPTION:Especially created for those who have completed an 8-week Mindfulness for Life or MBCT course\, this 12-theme course isstructured to support a lifelong learning journey. Participants begin by reviewing what it means to wake up\, and to intentionally give attention\, energy and time to what brings them joy\, meaning and purpose. Over time\, they develop confidence to meet difficulty with kindness\, savour joy with appreciation\, align their choices with their deepest values\, and act with courage and authenticity. These three keys of mindfulness (awareness\, befriending and intention) extend to include a fourth – action. Together they are ways of being that can support people to live the life they aspire to. \nThis course mirrors the monthly podcast sessions on ‘A life well lived’ delivered by Professor Willem Kuyken\, exploring each theme in greater depth and including practice and group exercises. The twelve themes cover: \n– Wake up!\n– Pay attention!\n– Appreciating the life we have\n– Coming home to our body\n– Our most important natural resource: our ‘Body-Mind’\n– How we react to stress and difficulties\n– Befriending our body and mind\n– Perspective: changing the view\n– Responding wisely\n– Cool head\, warm heart: finding balance\n– Living well: taking care of ourselves\, our relationships and the world\n– A life well lived

SUMMARY:Day of Practice – Theme: Generosity
DESCRIPTION:The session is 5 hours and includes guided sitting\, standing and movement practices of up to 30 minutes in length\, and some extended periods of silence. \nTypically\, each Day of Practice has a theme based on one of the attitudes we explore as part of both mindfulness practice and everyday experience. For example\, non-judging’\, ‘patience’\, ‘letting go’ etc. \nThe theme for this Day of Practice is ‘Generosity’. It meets the British Association of Mindfulness-Based Approaches (BAMBA) Good Practice Guidelines by contributing towards annual retreat requirements.

The online course runs on Tuesday evenings from 19 January 2027 and includes an optional one-day retreat in 2027.\nOverview\nThis course allows people to explore an aspect of mindfulness that isn’t covered explicitly in other courses: ‘feeling tone.’ Feeling tone is a sense of the positive or negative that every human experiences and is the tipping point for our mood. \nDeeper Mindfulness is informed by recent psychological findings that reveal that every waking moment\, our understanding of the world is dominated by imagining how we can take action within it\, coloured by what is called ‘feeling tone.’ Feeling tone is the moment-by-moment ‘read-out’ of how much a sensation\, thought\, or emotion feels pleasant\, unpleasant\, or neither. Based on this moment-by-moment ‘read out\,’ the body allocates its resources as it gears up for real or imagined action. This can prepare us well for action\, but it can also put us at risk of becoming exhausted without our realising it. \nDuring the eight weekly sessions\, you will learn meditations that help you tune into feeling tone moment by moment\, frame by frame. This provides an opportunity to see more clearly both the tipping points for distress and exhaustion\, and also how to flourish by freeing yourself to appreciate life again\, even in the midst of difficulty. \nWho is the course for?\nThis course is designed for those who have already completed an eight-week mindfulness-based programme and want to explore mindfulness more deeply. Please note\, this courses is designed for the general public and may not be suitable for everyone. SUMMARY:Teaching Presence in Relationship: an Interpersonal Mindfulness teacher training retreat
DESCRIPTION:𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 \nThe residential “Teaching Presence in Relationship” teacher training retreat\, is designed to prepare teachers of mindfulness-based programmes to teach the Interpersonal Mindfulness Programme. This residential training course will take place at the Ammerdown Retreat Centre in Somerset\, near Bath\, from 22 to 30 October 2027. \n𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄\nThe Interpersonal Mindfulness Programme offers participants a systematic method for cultivating mindfulness within the context of their relational lives. Extending practice beyond the personal to the interpersonal and social domains of life allows for healing and growth for everyone. \nThe philosophical and scientific roots of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and other mindfulness based-interventions help reduce suffering and and increase wellbeing. They are a force for good in public health\, offering accessible and empowering ways for people to actively participate in their own health and wellness. \nThe Interpersonal Mindfulness Programme goes a step further\, offering a relational mindfulness practice drawn from the foundations of Insight Dialogue (Interpersonal Meditation). Designed specifically to be practiced within live interaction\, this approach cultivates awareness in the midst of relationship\, fostering insight into the stress\, reactivity\, and habitual patterns that arise in connection with others. \n𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁?\nThe residential training is offered over nine days in person at the Ammerdown Retreat Centre. \nThe first two and a half days of this training are presented primarily in retreat form. During this period\, participants will be immersed\, experientially\, in the nine-session course curriculum. Silence is practiced throughout this part of the retreat except when meditators are guided in dialogue together. This immersive\, experiential approach to learning allows participants to internalise the relational meditation guidelines before going on to teach them. \nDuring the subsequent six-day training period\, participants engage in relational practice as well as guiding and being guided in teach-backs and in small and large groups. These interactive exercises deepen participants’ experiential understanding of the meditation guidelines\, contemplative themes\, and cultivate their teaching presence and skill. A comprehensive handbook containing the full curriculum will be supplied to participants to support learning and teaching. \n𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀\nThe training objectives include: \nCultivating the skills required to guide Insight Dialogue–based practices\, including guidelines\, themes\, and choreographed relational practice sequences;\nDeveloping a theoretical understanding of relational mindfulness methods\, skills and practices;\nExploring and experiencing the six guidelines of Insight Dialogue within the Interpersonal Mindfulness Programme;\nExpanding and enriching teachers’ embodied capacity as a vehicle to communicate and interact effectively with programme participants; \nWho is the training for?\nThe programme is for mindfulness teachers who wish to teach the Interpersonal Mindfulness programme to graduates of an eight-week mindfulness course or to people who have prior meditation experience and the permission of the teacher. The training may also be of interest to health care professionals\, who fulfil the prerequisites\, who wish to deepen their presence in working relationships. \nThe teacher trainers are: Rosalie Dores\, Phyllis Hicks\, Kevin Fong. \nMore info and how to book here: https://sussexmindfulnesscentre.nhs.uk/event/teaching-presence-in-relationship-an-interpersonal-mindfulness-teacher-training/
