SUMMARY:Foundations of mindfulness: Five-day retreat
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on Buddhist conceptualisations of the nature of experience\, suffering and the self\, the retreat will offer a bridge into contemporary secular mindfulness practice\, teaching and life. The five-day retreat takes place Ammerdown Retreat Centre\, near Bath. It is led by Ruth Sequeira\, Chris Barker\, Jo Cromarty and Robert Marx. \nThe retreat \nThis retreat will support a deepening of participants’ mindfulness practice using the framework of the four Foundations of Mindfulness (satipatthana) and the Four Divine Abidings (brahma vihara). Drawing on Buddhist conceptualisations of the nature of experience\, suffering and the self\, the retreat will offer a bridge into contemporary secular mindfulness practice\, teaching and life. The retreat will use a traditional retreat structure which allows us to simplify our life in order to see more clearly how we relate to ourselves and the world\, and to respond with kindness and compassion. There will be periods of teaching\, guided and unguided practice\, dialogue and unstructured time. Most of the week will be held in silence with opportunities to for a one-to-one meeting with a retreat leader and for optional peer sharing groups. \nWhere and when is it?\nThe retreat is at the beautiful Ammerdown Retreat Centre\, near Bath. The retreat starts on Sunday\, 20 September and finishes at 2pm on Friday\, 25 September 2026. You can arrive between 5pm and 6pm on the Sunday. \nWho is the retreat for? \nThe retreat is suitable for mindfulness teachers in training\, qualified mindfulness teachers and those simply wanting to deepen their practice and bridge contemplative wisdom traditions and secular practice and teaching. The retreat will count as their retreat for those training in mindfulness-based approaches with the Sussex Mindfulness & Compassion Centre MC or NHS Talking Therapies; and for those applying to\, or renewing their membership on the BAMBA Register\, this retreat meets the requirement for mindfulness teachers to do an annual\, mostly silent retreat. \nWhat requirements are there to attend? \nCompletion of an eight-week mindfulness course (MBCT/MBSR)\, or similar eight-week programme\, and participation in at least a day of guided silent mindfulness practice. Please ensure you are able to attend the entire event. If this is not possible\, please contact us at spft.smc@nhs.net to discuss before submitting an application. \nWe will offer a short online orientation meeting a few weeks before the retreat to help you think about the optimal conditions to support you in the retreat. A zoom link will be sent nearer to the start date for this.

SUMMARY:How to Get Unstuck & Befriend the Unknown (FREE Live Weekly Class)
DESCRIPTION:Many of us have invested much of our lives in doing the work to build self awareness and incredible insight around our patterns and healing. We’ve been in therapy\, practice meditation\, and are committed to becoming the best version of self we can be. And yet\, we often feel stuck in patterns that we know don’t serve us. \nInsight and awareness are critical\, but often only get us so far. We feel stuck\, watching the patterns playing out and don’t know how to find the peace and freedom we seek. \nWhen feeling stuck in the cycle of ruminating thoughts\, we can so easily NOT act. The path ahead may feel so daunting\, so unknown that we become overwhelmed with fear and self-doubt and simply freeze as we analyze and reason and question and weigh the options. So much of our focus and weight is placed in the realm of logic\, while overlooking the body and heart. \nWhen we working with the deeper layers of conditioning\, associations\, and the patterns we’ve reinforced for longer than we may even be aware\, peace is revealed and fear dissolves. We remember just how powerful we are\, and that what was learned can be reprogrammed. \nDiscover a new avenue to get unstuck and confidently embrace the unknown. In this 90-minute workshop\, Certified Hypnotherapist and Subconscious Healing coach\, Alicia Joy\, CHt.\, will guide you in exploring the power of the subconscious mind and share exercises for reframing subconscious thought patterns. By the end of the workshop\, you will have resources for moving forward with confidence and igniting an inner ease and stability inherent within. \nGet clear about what is keeping you stuck.\nUnderstand the power of the subconscious mind.\nBegin to reframe and rewrite your patterns using tools and strategies.\nExperience a live\, guided hypnosis journey to get unstuck. \nFeel grounded\, confident\, empowered\, and clear moving forward in your life. \nWhat participants have said:\n“This was the first time I allowed myself to feel what it’d feel like if I was there\, in my desired state\, without resistance. It felt so serene.”– Lori\n“This has been so powerful and relevant to me. Thank you so much. Very rich and timely; this came into my life as a delicious sign.” — Linda\n“I felt so much relief\, and less blocked than I have in a long time.”–Sharon\n“I feel a weight lifted. I truly reconnected with joy I felt I had lost. The path ahead is much clearer.” –Darlene\n“There is so much freedom in understanding what is holding me back and letting go of urgency to decide and act. SUMMARY:Mindful Self-Compassion course: eight weeks – Monday evenings
DESCRIPTION:Our eight-week Mindful Self-Compassion course teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to challenges and difficult emotions with care and understanding. \nMonday evenings\, from 5 to 7.30pm. The orientation is on 21 September followed by the eight-week course from 28 September to 16 November. \nOverview\nHow we respond to those around us is fundamental to a happy life. We are often encouraged to be kind to people. But in trying to show compassion towards others\, we may forget to look after ourselves. Can we truly be kind to anyone else if we cannot be kind to ourselves? \nIn the Mindful Self-Compassion course we offer ways to meet our own challenges with greater care. Through the course we will learn how to be more mindful of our own feelings in response to others. And we learn how this can help us to be more resilient in difficult situations. We also learn to be less judgemental and more caring. We will learn how this can reduce anxiety\, leaving us more open to making helpful changes in our lives. \nThe course creates a safe\, supportive environment. There are three core components: \nmindfulness (being present with whatever is happening)\nself-kindness (treating ourselves with care\, rather than criticism)\ncommon humanity (recognising our suffering as part of the shared human experience) \nThe weekly sessions include: \n– meditations\n– short talks\n– discussion\, including in small groups\n– experiential exercises\n– resources to support home practice \nThe course creators are Kristin Neff\, researcher in the field of self-compassion. And Christopher Germer\, leader in the integration of mindfulness and psychotherapy. They have each published books on the subject. You can find out more about our Mindful Self-Compassion course here. \nWho is this course for?\nThis course is designed for the general public\, so you do not need to have attended a mindfulness course before. Please note\, this courses may not be suitable for everyone. If you are experiencing mental health issues\, you should talk to your GP about being referred to the appropriate clinical service.

SUMMARY:Mindful Self-Compassion Course (8-week)
DESCRIPTION:How long have you kept going with that voice in your head that is judgmental\, critical\, and harsh? You have believed this is keeping you on track and in line. Research shows that this critical voice we have adopted for ourselves\, is actually doing the opposite. It keeps you from long term sustained changes. The right way is to learn to let in a kinder\, gentler voice that doesn’t dysregulate your system. \nI invite you on this 8-week journey to learn to quiet that inner-critic and make space for kindness for yourself. This is how you authentically offer kindness to others\, and how you can progress on your path. \nMSC is shown to improve relationships\, reduce stress and anxiety\, reduce depression\, caregiver fatigue\, cultivate happiness\, regulate yourself through challenges and difficulties\, and more.

SUMMARY:8-Week Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy for Depression (MBCT)
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an 8-week group course recommended in national health guidelines for people who suffer from or have suffered from depression in the past. \nWeekly sessions are 2 hours and delivered online. They involve mindfulness meditation with cognitive therapy exercises to support you to become more aware of your mind and body and begin to dissolve some less helpful habits of thinking\, such as rumination\, worry and self-criticism. \nOver the past 15 years MBCT has become increasingly available within health services as the advantages of using this approach have become more established. \nIts popularity has increased as people are drawn to the central message of MBCT; that our lives are immeasurably impoverished by our habitual tendency to be on ‘automatic pilot’\, during which the richness of momentary experience passes unnoticed. MBCT helps us develop an alternative way of being with experience as we learn skills to more fully engage with our present experience\, to be ‘in the moment’. \nMBCT courses are delivered online in collaboration with the Nottingham Centre for Mindfulness\, located within the UK’s National Health Service (NHS)\, who have been providing MBCT to people accessing their clinical services since 2007. Their mindfulness teachers offer this intervention in a wide range of clinical settings.

SUMMARY:Day of Practice - Theme: Letting Go
DESCRIPTION:The session is 5 hours and includes guided sitting\, standing and movement practices of up to 30 minutes in length\, and some extended periods of silence. \nTypically\, each Day of Practice has a theme based on one of the attitudes we explore as part of both mindfulness practice and everyday experience. For example\, non-judging’\, ‘patience’\, ‘letting go’ etc. \nThe theme for this Day of Practice is ‘Letting Go’. \nThe practices won’t be exclusively about that attitude\, but may be explored with have a ‘flavour’ of the theme for that day. This might mean exploring ‘non-striving’ as part of the body scan or ‘allowing’ in a movement practice. \nThe Day of Practice is designed for those with an existing mindfulness practice\, as well as teachers (or trainee teachers) of mindfulness-based programmes. It meets the British Association of Mindfulness-Based Approaches (BAMBA) Good Practice Guidelines by contributing towards annual retreat requirements.

SUMMARY:Deeper Mindfulness: Exploring feeling tone frame by frame (8-week course)
DESCRIPTION:Deeper Mindfulness: Exploring Feeling Tone Frame-by-Frame is an 8-week course developed by Professor Mark Williams and colleagues\, designed for you if you’ve already completed a mindfulness-based programme and you’d like to explore mindfulness more deeply. \nIt’s informed by recent psychological findings that reveal that every waking moment\, our understanding of the world is dominated by imagining how we can take action within it\, coloured by what is called ‘feeling tone’ – the moment-by-moment ‘read-out’ of whether a sensation\, thought or emotion feels pleasant\, unpleasant\, or neither. Based on this moment-by-moment ‘read out’\, the body allocates its resources as it gears up for real or imagined action. This can prepare us well for action\, but it can also put us at risk of becoming exhausted without our realising it. \nAncient traditions saw feeling tone (vedana) as a fundamental element of every moment of experience and a central aspect of mindfulness practice. Learning specific practices to help us become aware of feeling tone allows us to see clearly the very instant where we become caught up in pursuing or rejecting something and become entangled in a web of emotional distress. Meditation teacher Joseph Goldstein has said that mindfulness of feeling tone is one of the master keys that both reveals and unlocks the deepest patterns of our conditioning. \nDuring the 8 weekly sessions\, you’ll learn meditations that prepare you for\, then help you tune into\, feeling tone – frame-by-frame. This provides you with an opportunity to see more clearly both the tipping points for distress and exhaustion\, and also how to flourish by freeing yourself to appreciate life again\, even in the midst of difficulty.

For many people\, it’s easier to build these “mindfulness muscles” first through movement\, so that they can then be applied in the stillness of meditation (and in daily life\, where the rubber meets the road!). This unique online training is designed to develop your skills in leading movement practices that center mindfulness\, so that your students can learn to be more present for what matters to them. \nWe will take an inter-disciplinary approach\, studying mindfulness teachings from the Buddhist tradition\, as well as movement practices from Yoga\, Somatics\, and Qigong. Each of these modalities offers something unique and valuable to the cultivation of embodied awareness. \nThis 60-hour online training will unfold over six months\, so that you have time to really integrate the teachings and develop your skills. The first live session is October 10\, 2026! Please see the website for further details: https://www.movedtomeditate.yoga/mmtt

SUMMARY:Mindful creative all-day retreat
DESCRIPTION:A one-day mindfulness retreat\, including meditation practices\, creative expression and journaling\, that will be held mostly in silence. Experience of creative expression is not necessary. \nBackground to the day \nThis day builds on the positive responses from offering a similar event last year. We realised from last year’s experience that there was a real hunger\, both for connecting with our creativity and also for engaging with mindfulness and compassion practices in ways that keep us freshly discovering ourselves. We found last time that for some people\, creative practices really deepened places inside that they could access in a way that was both different from\, and also complementary to\, the mindfulness practice. \nChögyam Trungpa Rinpoche\, the great Tibetan meditation teacher\, saw art as a direct extension of meditation practice. He believed that art naturally arises from the clarity of the settled mind. Trungpa emphasized a “Dharma art” that was simple\, immediate and unembellished\, not an ego-based\, “self-expression”: “Dharma art is simply the activity of nonaggression. It is the expression of basic sanity. When you are free from aggression\, your perception becomes clear and precise. Then whatever you do – whether arranging flowers\, painting\, writing poetry\, or making a cup of tea – can become an expression of that sanity.” \nContent of the day \nThis day will be held as a mostly silent retreat day with mindfulness practices interspersed with creativity\, using clay\, drawing/painting and journaling. Some meditation experience (such as having done an 8 week course) is required but no experience of artistic work is needed. Materials will be supplied. The day will be held at the Sussex Education Centre on the Millview hospital site. \nWhy a one-day retreat? \nA one-day mindfulness retreat is an important part of the eight-week mindfulness course. It also offers an opportunity to extend your practice within a supportive environment. For people who meditate regularly the retreat offers a great way to deepen and refresh your practice. Read more about the benefits of a day long retreat. \nThis day retreat counts towards the requirement to attend silent retreats as part your BAMBA registration as a mindfulness teacher. \nWho is it for?\nThis day is right for you if you have attended an eight-week Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy\, Mindfulness for Life or Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course\, or have an established mindfulness practice. No artistic experience is required. Please note\, this is not a clinical intervention and it is not advisable to do this day in the heat of a crisis\, when it would be important to access your GP or your designated mental health clinician. \nRetreat leaders: Robert Marx\, Sarah Marx

SUMMARY:Half-Day of Practice – Theme: Trust
DESCRIPTION:The session is 3 hours and includes guided sitting\, standing and movement practices of up to 30 minutes in length\, and some extended periods of silence. \nTypically\, each Day of Practice has a theme based on one of the attitudes we explore as part of both mindfulness practice and everyday experience. For example\, non-judging’\, ‘patience’\, ‘letting go’ etc. \nThe theme for this Day of Practice is ‘Trust’.
