SUMMARY:Living Mindfully in Later Life (7-Week Course)
DESCRIPTION:Later life often arrives with many kinds of change: shifts in health and mobility\, new patterns of work or retirement\, alterations in family life\, and the experience of saying goodbye to people\, places\, and roles that have mattered. \nFeelings such as sadness\, anxiety\, and uncertainty are common threads within this stage of life\, alongside concerns about independence\, memory\, and social connection. Published studies with older adults suggest that mindfulness-based programmes can be nourishing and well received\, supporting people to meet pain and illness more gently\, to feel less alone\, and to develop greater emotional resilience in the face of life’s challenges. Living Mindfully in Later Life is a new 7-week course in which we invite you to experience the ways in which meditation practises and simple exercises can build the skills to help you navigate the ups and downs of a changing life and to rediscover joy and connection. \nSessions are group-based and take place weekly over the 7-week period. The first session is 2.25 hours and the remaining sessions are 2 hours. This course takes place entirely online via Zoom.

SUMMARY:MBSR Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program 8 Weeks
DESCRIPTION:The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program (MBSR) was pioneered by Jon Kabat Zinn\, PhD at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center’s Center for Mindfulness over 40 years ago. Since then over 6000 studies have been published worldwide attesting to the effectiveness of the program. The effects of stress can be felt physically\, mentally and emotionally and the studies delve into all of these categories and more. We define mindfulness as paying attention moment by moment on purpose and without judgement. \nThe practice of mindfulness has been around for thousands of years and the far reaching benefits have been attested to by practitioners over the centuries. Mindfulness can now be found in practically every segment of our lives including\, but not limited to\, healthcare\, academics\, the arts\, sports\, business and peak performance. It has spawned other related programs such as Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy(MBCT)\, Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention Program for Depression\, Mindful Eating Programs and Mindfulness in the Schools just to name a few. \nAlong with all the other benefits\, as the practice of mindfulness unfolds in your life it can be recognized by a sense of experiencing life more fully along with a deeper sense of peace\, compassion and feeling of wellbeing. There is a renewed sense of being connected to yourself and the world around you….a renewed sense of curiosity\, resilience and the adventure of life. So become a Phoenix mindfulness enthusiast\, begin the adventure now!

SUMMARY:Mindful Self-Compassion course: eight weeks – Monday evenings
DESCRIPTION:Our eight-week Mindful Self-Compassion course teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to challenges and difficult emotions with care and understanding. \nMonday evenings\, from 5 to 7.30pm. The orientation is on 21 September followed by the eight-week course from 28 September to 16 November. \nOverview\nHow we respond to those around us is fundamental to a happy life. We are often encouraged to be kind to people. But in trying to show compassion towards others\, we may forget to look after ourselves. Can we truly be kind to anyone else if we cannot be kind to ourselves? \nIn the Mindful Self-Compassion course we offer ways to meet our own challenges with greater care. Through the course we will learn how to be more mindful of our own feelings in response to others. And we learn how this can help us to be more resilient in difficult situations. We also learn to be less judgemental and more caring. We will learn how this can reduce anxiety\, leaving us more open to making helpful changes in our lives. \nThe course creates a safe\, supportive environment. There are three core components: \nmindfulness (being present with whatever is happening)\nself-kindness (treating ourselves with care\, rather than criticism)\ncommon humanity (recognising our suffering as part of the shared human experience) \nThe weekly sessions include: \n– meditations\n– short talks\n– discussion\, including in small groups\n– experiential exercises\n– resources to support home practice \nThe course creators are Kristin Neff\, researcher in the field of self-compassion. And Christopher Germer\, leader in the integration of mindfulness and psychotherapy. They have each published books on the subject. You can find out more about our Mindful Self-Compassion course here. \nWho is this course for?\nThis course is designed for the general public\, so you do not need to have attended a mindfulness course before. Please note\, this courses may not be suitable for everyone. If you are experiencing mental health issues\, you should talk to your GP about being referred to the appropriate clinical service.

SUMMARY:8-Week Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy for Depression (MBCT)
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an 8-week group course recommended in national health guidelines for people who suffer from or have suffered from depression in the past. \nWeekly sessions are 2 hours and delivered online. They involve mindfulness meditation with cognitive therapy exercises to support you to become more aware of your mind and body and begin to dissolve some less helpful habits of thinking\, such as rumination\, worry and self-criticism. \nOver the past 15 years MBCT has become increasingly available within health services as the advantages of using this approach have become more established. \nIts popularity has increased as people are drawn to the central message of MBCT; that our lives are immeasurably impoverished by our habitual tendency to be on ‘automatic pilot’\, during which the richness of momentary experience passes unnoticed. MBCT helps us develop an alternative way of being with experience as we learn skills to more fully engage with our present experience\, to be ‘in the moment’. \nMBCT courses are delivered online in collaboration with the Nottingham Centre for Mindfulness\, located within the UK’s National Health Service (NHS)\, who have been providing MBCT to people accessing their clinical services since 2007. Their mindfulness teachers offer this intervention in a wide range of clinical settings.

SUMMARY:Day of Practice - Theme: Letting Go
DESCRIPTION:The session is 5 hours and includes guided sitting\, standing and movement practices of up to 30 minutes in length\, and some extended periods of silence. \nTypically\, each Day of Practice has a theme based on one of the attitudes we explore as part of both mindfulness practice and everyday experience. For example\, non-judging’\, ‘patience’\, ‘letting go’ etc. \nThe theme for this Day of Practice is ‘Letting Go’. \nThe practices won’t be exclusively about that attitude\, but may be explored with have a ‘flavour’ of the theme for that day. This might mean exploring ‘non-striving’ as part of the body scan or ‘allowing’ in a movement practice. \nThe Day of Practice is designed for those with an existing mindfulness practice\, as well as teachers (or trainee teachers) of mindfulness-based programmes. It meets the British Association of Mindfulness-Based Approaches (BAMBA) Good Practice Guidelines by contributing towards annual retreat requirements.

DESCRIPTION:This eight-week Interpersonal Mindfulness programme was developed to support people in integrating their mindfulness practice into their relationships with others. \nOVERVIEW\nRelating to others is a fundamental aspect of our everyday lives\, with family\, friends\, in the workplace and in our wider community. For some of us\, it is at the core of our professional practice. Our relationships can be a source of well-being where we feel connected to others and also a source of stress when miscommunication and disconnection inevitably happens. \nThe Interpersonal Mindfulness Program (IMP) has been developed by the Centre for Mindfulness and the Metta Foundation in the US. It has been designed to teach those with prior mindfulness/ meditation training to integrate the benefits of their personal meditation practice into the context of their relational lives: deepening presence\, empathy and compassion. Click here for a first feasibility study on IMP. \nWHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?\nThis course is developed for the general public and will be of particular interest to health care professionals wishing to deepen their presence in their working relationships. SUMMARY:Half-Day of Practice – Theme: Trust
DESCRIPTION:The session is 3 hours and includes guided sitting\, standing and movement practices of up to 30 minutes in length\, and some extended periods of silence. \nTypically\, each Day of Practice has a theme based on one of the attitudes we explore as part of both mindfulness practice and everyday experience. For example\, non-judging’\, ‘patience’\, ‘letting go’ etc. \nThe theme for this Day of Practice is ‘Trust’.
